"The New Regime" is the 1st episode of Season 5 of The Next Step and the 135th episode overall. It aired on May 26, 2017. It is the Season 5 premiere.
Synopsis[]
"Some of last year's A-Troupe, and some new hopefuls, show up for auditions only to find that The Next Step has a sleek new look.[1]
Plot[]
The auditionees for A-Troupe enter Studio 1, one of Kate's changes to aid in the studio's rebound from their Regionals loss. Piper confesses that since then, many dancers like Cassie and Alfie have left The Next Step, but the studio is presently packed with prospective A-Troupers. Skylar and Richelle wonder who the new studio head will be, since Riley has stepped down to attend business school. Michelle enters the studio, feeling strange at the absence of all of her friends. She is happy to see Emily, believing she is auditioning, but is taken aback by her announcement that she is the new studio head.
Emily announces that she has hired Daniel as her choreographer, who promptly enters the room. The dancers disperse to warm up, with Michelle left in disbelief that she now has to answer to somebody who was once on her team. Henry and Noah reunite, and Henry admits that Noah is looking the best he has seen him since he broke up with Amanda. Noah tells Henry that he met a girl he likes at a ballet workshop, whom he thinks will be auditioning. The girl, who has since entered the room, is confused at the sight of Henry, revealing that she knows him but hasn't seen him in years. Noah then notices her and instantly runs to hug her; Henry is shocked, realizing that Noah's crush is his ex-girlfriend, Jacquie.
Emily and Daniel scope the dancers as they warm up. Zara and Josh discuss their nerves; Zara is nervous, but Josh claims he isn't. Richelle rehearses a flip, impressing Ozzy, who subsequently attempts to flirt with her, leaving Richelle unamused. LaTroy and Sloane excitedly enter the studio; Sloane reveals that she will not be auditioning since she has been given the opportunity to work with Luther Brown, but kisses LaTroy and wishes him good luck. Emily passes by Amy and Piper and tells Amy to put her hair up, prompting Amy to confess her belief that A-Troupe will turn into robots under Emily's guidance. Emily asks Michelle what she thinks of the new studio; Michelle likes it, but believes it doesn't compare to Studio A. Emily realizes Michelle isn't that excited but assures her that she will be more utilized on the team, making Michelle think that maybe this new situation could work.
Daniel gathers the dancers around and Emily divides them into groups for the auditions. The first group consists of Ozzy, Alexandra, Kevin, Jasmine, and LaTroy. As they gather in front of Emily and Daniel, Emily thanks them for coming, but reveals that they will not be auditioning and invites them to join B-Troupe instead, confessing that the studio will not win Regionals with breakdancers, hip-hop dancers, or J-Troupers. Amy begins to voice her disagreement but is silenced by a look from Emily. Michelle confesses her unease about the studio's changes.
Daniel announces that the remaining auditionees will perform a freestyle solo, which must showcase creativity, versatility, and, above all, technique. Group one consists of Noah, Jacquie, Henry, Tyler, and Danielle. Noah auditions, during which he pulls Jacquie onto the floor and dances with her, making Henry reminiscent of his time dating Jacquie. Jacquie auditions next, confessing that she is very competitive and won't stop until she is at the top. Henry auditions next, confessing that Jacquie broke up with him two years ago because she did not believe him to be a good enough dancer. Tyler auditions next, followed by Danielle. Group two goes next. Amy auditions first, during which Emily and Daniel discuss her previous outburst. Next, Piper auditions. Zara auditions next, confessing that dance has got her through some tough times. Josh auditions, confessing that he used to be a typical jock, but always had a part of him that was a dancer. Lola auditions next, confessing that she didn't fit in at her old studio despite being dance captain there, and is hoping for a fresh start. Michelle auditions next, and despite both Emily and Daniel complimenting her, Michelle feels strange having them judge her dancing. Skylar auditions next, expressing her wish to be dance captain again; however, Emily takes note of multiple flaws during her solo. Last is Richelle, who confesses her wish to be at the very top of A-Troupe.
As the auditions end, Daniel and Emily thank the dancers and retreat to Emily's office to pick their team. Henry confronts Noah about Jacquie, revealing that she is the same girl who broke his heart and telling him to stay away from her. From across the room, Jacquie smiles at Noah and he smiles ever so slightly back, not knowing what to do.
Emily and Daniel are ready to reveal their troupe of ten dancers, and announce the new members of A-Troupe to be Michelle, Lola, Richelle, Noah, Zara, Danielle, Jordan, Tyler, Jacquie, and Piper; Henry, Amy, and Skylar do not make it onto the troupe. As the dancers who did not make it leave the room, A-Troupe briefly celebrates, only to be cut off by Emily who tells them that they need to get to work.
Meanwhile, the dancers who did not make it enter the locker room saddened and frustrated. Skylar is particularly infuriated, asking her peers if anyone has ever heard of a dance captain being moved down to B-Troupe. Refusing to be moved down, Skylar storms out and vows to find a better studio. LaTroy notices Amy, and realizes that she got cut too. Josh also voices his frustration, since his family has just moved to the area and he had hoped to be on A-Troupe. Meanwhile, Michelle peers from the doorway, silently listening in on the upset dancers, and hears Amy admit to LaTroy that she has never been cut from a competitive team before as Henry sags against the lockers. LaTroy confesses that it has not been a good day, and that he is going to go home, drink juice, and watch TV, as that is what he does when he has had a bad day. Henry admits that he is at least happy B-Troupe rehearses in Studio A, so he'll have less of an opportunity to run into Jacquie, while LaTroy wonders if he even wants to be at the studio anymore if it means he'll be on B-Troupe. Michelle is left in disbelief at what Emily has done and decides she has to do something.
Michelle enters Emily's office and asks to speak to her. Emily agrees, so long as Michelle now addresses her as "Miss Emily". Michelle tells Emily that she thinks she made a huge mistake, and she has cut some of the best dancers. Emily disagrees, expressing her certainty that all of the best dancers are on her team. Michelle retorts that only classically trained dancers were picked, thus ignoring the hip-hop dancers and breakdancers, but Emily deems those dancers a mere hindrance. Michelle is left in even more disbelief and tells Emily she is wrong, which Emily deems disrespectful since Michelle is just a dancer while she is a studio head. Michelle asserts that things are about to change. Emily confesses that Michelle had better get used to her being in charge, while Michelle confesses that Emily doesn't intimidate her anymore and that she is going to take her on.
During the end credits, Michelle walks through Studio A.

Continuity[]
- Several details that were revealed in The Off Season: Season 1 are reaffirmed in this episode:
- Noah and Amanda are no longer in a relationship.
- Noah has feelings for Jacquie.
- Riley is no longer studio head of The Next Step Dance Studio, and is now attending business school.
- Ozzy has a crush on Richelle.
- Ozzy is in J-Troupe.
- Zara is in B-Troupe.
- Amy's mother has decided to become more involved in her dance career.
- The music and the style of the first portion of the first scene are very similar to that of "Get the Party Started."
- The moment where Piper and Amy realize that they are competing for the last spot on A-Troupe is reminiscent of Stephanie and Tiffany realizing the same thing in "The Final Cut".
- Emily not allowing Ozzy to audition follows her opinion that only returning A-Troupers and B-Troupers should audition for A-Troupe, which she first revealed in "Get the Party Started".
- However, this has not always been consistent: when selecting who would be her replacement for the Competition, Emily chooses Richelle, despite her being a J-Trouper at the time.[2]
Errors[]
- Emily confesses that she does not want breakdancers, hip-hop dancers or J-Troupers on her A-Troupe, but she does not prevent Henry and Josh both of whom are hip-hip dancers, from auditioning. However, it is possible that she makes an exception because they are proficient at acro, unlike LaTroy and Ozzy.
- Emily is adamant about dancers having their hair up, even instructing Amy to tie up her hair, but is seemingly unfazed by Michelle performing her audition with her hair down. It is possible that Michelle's shorter hair means she does not need to adhere to the rule, but this is never established.
- Richelle calls Ozzy delusional for thinking that he can move straight up to A-Troupe from J-Troupe, even though she herself auditions for A-Troupe twice as a J-Trouper. However, it is possible that the statement is meant to be ironic or because she failed to make it onto A-Troupe twice as a J-Trouper that she thinks Ozzy has no chance.
- Daniel is confirmed to be the new head choreographer of A-Troupe, but in "Rock and a Hard Place", he confesses that he does not want to choreograph ever again. However, he could have been talking specifically about choreographing specifically for that J-Troupe; this could also explain why he acts harshly towards Noah in future episodes, as he was in J-Troupe when Daniel first choreographed for them.
- Michelle claims to be uncomfortable at the thought of answering to Emily and Daniel, as she danced with both of them on A-Troupe. However, though she also danced with Riley, she never seems bothered by her being studio head in Season 4 - nor does she have a problem answering to Skylar as dance captain, despite Skylar being younger than her.
- However, given Riley's indecision and difficulties being studio head and the fact that James, Michelle and Amanda helped her regularly with her duties as studio head, it is possible that Michelle was fine with being under Riley's leadership due to her own elevated position, which would clearly not be established under Emily and Daniel's authority.
- Another possibility is Michelle had a better relationship with Riley (clearly evidenced by the fact that she and Riley are best friends throughout the first four seasons) than with Emily and Daniel and that was why she was more comfortable with Riley as studio head.
- Jacquie deems The Next Step Dance Studio the "best of the best", and cites their international reputation as the reason she wants to dance there. While the studio likely still has a positive reputation, they are technically no longer the "best of the best"; this title should go to Gemini Dance Studio, as they have replaced The Next Step as the International champions.[3]
- Henry confesses that Jacquie broke up with him because she didn’t think he was a good enough dancer, which contradicts his prior claim that she left him to be with someone else.[4]
- Emily calls Michelle Miss Nationals Soloist while she auditions, but Michelle technically no longer holds this title; since The Next Step does not attend the 18th Annual Absolute Dance Nationals, she is unable to defend her title, meaning it is now held by another dancer. However, it is possible that Emily just means that Michelle has won Miss National Soloist before and is clearly dancing at the level benefiting that title.
- Amy claims to have never been cut from a competitive team before, but in "Rivalry," she tells a story about being cut from a team because she could not master a double-back-handspring-back-layout, even after practicing the move all summer. However, the team could simply have been non-competitive, though this seems strange given the apparent level of difficulty.
Production Errors[]
- An unnamed dancer is seen stretching in Studio 1 before the scene in which she enters the studio.
- After Zara is seen speaking to Josh, there is a scene of her entering the studio and approaching Josh.
- Amy can be seen stretching with her hair up before Emily approaches her. However, when Emily orders Amy to tie her hair up, her hair is clearly down.
- A camera can briefly be seen during the beginning of Henry's audition.
