"Simple Twist of Fate" is the 10th episode in Season 4 of The Next Step and the 104th episode overall. It aired on April 15, 2016.
Synopsis
"A-Troupe performs at the qualifier. Meanwhile, a nervous Amanda wants to let Noah how she feels about him; Noah conceals his back injury; and Sloane tries to lift everyone's spirits by throwing a bash at the studio."[1]
Plot
Riley, Alfie, Michelle, Amanda, Noah, Richelle and Piper enter the venue for the first qualifier. The dancers are extremely excited and can't wait to perform, although Noah confesses that his back is still in pain but that he's not going to tell anyone so that they don't worry. Riley confesses that because The Next Step won Internationals, winning a qualifier for Regionals should be a piece of cake, but expresses her worry nonetheless.
In Studio A, Sloane is putting up a banner that reads "Congratulations!" when Amy and Henry enter. Sloane reveals that she is setting up for the "congratulations for qualifying" party. Henry believes the idea to be weird since they haven't yet won, but Henry and Amy decide to help Sloane set up nonetheless.
Riley notes the killer time difference between herself and James when Michelle and Amanda approach her. Michelle asks how she is doing, and Riley admits that even though she is not dancing, she feels as though she is responsible for what happens while simultaneously feeling like she has no control. Michelle confesses that this is the first true test of Riley as studio head, that the team is now hers, and that it is up to her to motivate them. Michelle thus suggests that Riley encourages the trio members. Riley takes on this idea and tells Michelle to speak to Piper and Amanda to speak to Richelle, while she will speak to Noah. Amanda is disappointed that she doesn't get to give Noah a pep talk, as telling him that she likes him would be a great motivator, but disperses with Michelle nonetheless. Riley beckons Noah and asks him how he is; Noah lies that he is fine. Riley tells Noah that she is really counting on Noah to be the rock of the trio due to his experience; Noah assures Riley that he will and even tells Riley to call him "Igneous" (which Riley initially mishears as "ignoramus"). Meanwhile, Michelle and Piper conclude their pep talk with a hug. An announcement beckons the competing teams to the back of the stage, and the dancers head to the performance area.
Henry, Sloane, and Amy are setting up the concession stand. Henry notices that Amy has placed apples on the table and critiques her choice of party snack; in response, Amy takes the apples and begins juggling them, claiming that she likes healthy choices at a party, when she drops one. Sloane is immediately reminded of her first dance competition and tells her peers of the experience: she was performing an Adam and Eve-themed duet with the cutest guy in the studio, and when she attempted to give him the apple, it ricocheted off of him as he spun, bounced off of three kids' heads, and hit the judge right in the face. Henry confesses that the apple must have been magical due to how much physics it defied. Amy asks Sloane how they scored and Sloane reveals that they were disqualified. Nonetheless, Amy offers Sloane an apple which she obviously turns down. Henry confesses that although Sloane's story is horrific, he can top it.
Meanwhile, the trio competition is in session. Noah confesses that the first few teams performed average routines, and that he feels he won't have to push himself too hard for them to win. Just then, a team called Gemini, who Riley says she has never heard of before, comes to the stage. Although their trio starts off slow, they progressively get better as they dance and eventually become extremely engaging. Riley becomes nervous, now unsure how easy it will be for them to qualify. Alfie notices Riley's unease and gives her a pep talk of her own, in which he assures her that she is doing a brilliant job as studio head and that the team is ready. Riley is appreciative, confessing that if James were there, he would have said exactly what Alfie did. Gemini finishes with a score of 97 points, a new qualifier record.
Henry tells his competition horror story: when he got to one of his dance competitions, he needed to use the washroom and, when he returned, he swore that he heard his crew being called to the stage only to realize once he got there that the crew was not his. Amy and Sloane ask what he did, and he tells them that the music started playing so he horribly mimicked their choreography; he demonstrates the tutting that the crew was doing and the tutting that he did (while Amy can't see the difference, Sloane can, but lies that she can't). Sloane assures Henry that they all did stupid things when they were little kids, but Henry then reveals that the incident took place last year. As the three dissolve into laughter, Amy confesses that her story is worse.
Michelle and Amanda speak of how amazing Gemini's routine was when Amanda decides to go say hi to Noah. Amanda sneaks up on Noah, which causes him to jump, and merely wishes him good luck despite secretly wanting to tell him of her true feelings for him. The two hug before Amanda leaves. Noah confesses that whenever he is feeling down, Amanda is always there for him. Thus, Noah forgets about his back and feels amazing.
Amy begrudgingly reveals her competition horror story: when she was performing her solo at a dance competition, her pants tore right down the middle while she performed the splits (she confesses that the worst part was that she was wearing her day of the week underwear for the wrong day). Not wanting anybody to see the rip, Amy performed the rest of the solo with her legs together, even during the acro sections. She reenacts her movements and soon enough all three are dancing "without legs".
The Next Step Dance Studio is finally called to the stage. As Piper, Richelle, and Noah prepare to dance, Noah confesses that he isn't going to let Amanda down. The routine commences extremely well until Noah lifts Richelle, when his back begins to hurt once again. Noah struggles on through the dance until he can barely lift the girls even a few inches off of the ground, let alone support them. Amanda immediately realizes that something is wrong with him. The trio ends disastrously, with Noah almost dropping Piper and Richelle. Riley immediately blames herself for the failed routine, and Richelle and Piper look on at Noah in stages of anger and disbelief. The trio scores 86 points, putting them in third place. Noah rushes past Alfie and Riley and out of the performance area, hoping that he didn't cost the team their chance at Regionals.
Rythum Plus Dance Company is next to dance, and performs extremely well, much to The Next Step's chagrin. Richelle voices her rage that they are International champions, yet they are being trounced by an insignificant studio, and claims that there is no way that they will stay in the top four. Although Alfie tries to remain confident, Riley knows that Richelle is probably right. Rythum Plus finishes and scores 92 points, putting them in third place and pushing The Next Step down to fourth. Amanda leaves to find Noah, and asks him if he is okay; Noah immediately asks what place they are in, and Amanda reveals that they are in fourth. Amanda asks Noah if there is anything that she can do, but Noah tells her that he wants to be alone. Amanda hurriedly leaves, wishing that Noah knew how much she cared about him.
The Next Step is still clinging on to fourth place as Dance Extreme[note 1] takes the stage. As they perform, the twins from Gemini’s routine approach The Next Step and begin mocking them. When the trio finishes, Richelle confesses that it doesn't look as though they will make it. Simultaneously, Henry runs into Studio A with balloons for the party, and he and Sloane express their confidence that The Next Step will win. Back at the venue, Dance Extreme scores 94 points, putting them in second place and bumping The Next Step down to fifth.
In Studio A, Amy receives a text from Piper stating the news, and she tells Henry and Sloane that they didn't qualify. The three dancers are shocked, and wonder where they go from there. Back at the venue, Riley confesses that she has never been more disappointed in the team nor herself and doesn't know if they can ever come back from this loss.
Trivia
- This is the first appearance of Hanna Miller as Heather.
- The Next Step Dance Studio has failed to qualify for Regionals at the first qualifier, and must now compete at one or both of the next two qualifiers.
- Gemini Dance Studio, Dance Extreme, Rythum Plus Dance Company and an unknown studio have qualified for Regionals, leaving only four spots left.
Continuity
- The lift that Noah attempts to perform with Richelle and Piper is likely the same one that Max performs with Giselle and Thalia in their "Tides" trio in "Put You First" and again with Giselle and Riley in "Turn, Turn, Turn"; it is likely that Riley taught Noah how to do it.
- Amy and Sloane wear their Zero Percent Club friendship bracelets, which they made in "Welcome to the Jungle".
Production Errors
- Before The Next Step Dance Studio performs at the qualifier, Michelle looks at Amanda. The exact same footage is played again after the performance.
- The team that should be Dance Extreme is incorrectly referred to as Dance Inc.; the team's correct name is revealed in the credits of this episode, and is later confirmed at Regionals.
- The qualifier venue bears a resemblance to Elite Dance Academy, which was revealed to have closed down in "One More Time".
Cultural references
- The title of this episode refers to a song of the same name by Bob Dylan.
