TNS East (short for The Next Step East[2]) is the temporary name for A-Troupe after Michelle quits the troupe and creates TNS West. TNS East is now a defunct troupe.

History

TNS East is originally just A-Troupe. Following Michelle's departure, Kate gives her permission to create TNS West, and A-Troupe is renamed "TNS East" as a result.[3] Because it is technically the official A-Troupe, TNS East is often seen as the more legitimate troupe and therefore gets more funding and resources than its rival.[2]

Emily chooses Richelle as dance captain for TNS East. Emily's reluctance to have alternates later causes her to kick Piper out of the troupe after accepting Amy as a new member. In the lead-up to their dance battle against TNS West, Zara pulls out in order to compete at a math competition and Noah leaves in order to compete with TNS West. Emily proposes the dance battle be competed between the five best dancers from each troupe. After he is kicked off Michelle's troupe, Emily brings Elliot in to replace Noah.

TNS East wins the dance battle against TNS West, making them the team that will go to Regionals.[4] However, after Elliot is discovered to be a professional dancer and the rivalry between TNS East and West becomes apparent to Kate, the troupe is disallowed from competing.[5] The troupe eventually disbands altogether, in favour of a merge between its members and TNS West's members.[6] Tyler, Danielle and (presumably) Jordan think that the merge will not work, so they do not make it onto the merged troupe and leave The Next Step.

Description

TNS East is a more technical troupe than TNS West, as per Emily's desire to have a team solely made up of technical dancers. There are no alternates, as Emily believes everyone at TNS East should have the opportunity to dance.[7]

Additionally, the troupe is much more strict than its rival, resulting in a series of rules: no sharing choreography or information about the troupe's activities with "outsiders", as Emily deems those who don't dance at TNS East;[2] no cellphones in the studio, as Emily considers these a distraction from dance;[8] and all female dancers must wear their hair up in the studio.[9]
